New Spar on the cards

THE redevelopment of the Glemsford Motor Services site, which is likely to include a new Spar, is expected to be approved.

Plans to demolish the business in Bells Lane and replace it with two retail units, one of which would be taken up by the convenience store, will be decided by Babergh District Council on Wednesday.

The authority’s development committee has been recommended to approve the proposals, which include creating 15 car parking spaces at the back of the site.

The parish council called for plans to be refused and retailers in the village claimed the Spar could put jobs at risk.

Both say the development would increase traffic and the opening hours of 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 10am on Sunday, that Spar proposes, would lead to late night noise, litter and gathering teenagers.
