New football project set up

TEENAGERS are the focus of a youth project called Be Active that has kicked off in Acton.

A new football club, to give young people the chance to get together and learn the game from experienced coaches, has been set up.

Babergh District Council and Suffolk Football Association have teamed up to launch a rural football programme aimed at older teenagers who are looking for something active to do on a Friday night.

Stephanie Lloyd, Babergh’s Be Active officer, said: “Young people of this age are a hard age to engage with – there is a mix of maturity and youthfulness in them and they often feel restricted in what they want to be able to do and what their age allows them to do.

“This project is simple – it gives them the means to do what they want to do and also offers them the opportunity to take it further.”

The project is being supported by Acton and Great Waldingfield local community support officer Colleen Ardley, Suffolk County Council and Acton Parish Council.

Teenagers will be able to gain FA coaching qualifications and have the chance to run the sessions themselves.

The first night was held between 6pm and 7.30pm at Acton Village Hall on Friday. Sessions will be £1 and players can just turn up and play, with no need to book or be in a team.
