New drive to recycle more
HOUSEHOLDERS are being asked to put unwanted clothes and textiles in their recycling bins as part of a new textile recycling trial being introduced in the coming months.
Residents will receive new plastic textile recycling bags in which to put unwanted clothing, shoes, boots, wellington boots, slippers, hats, scarves, gloves, bed linen, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, handbags, belts, clean underwear, curtains, towels, tea towels and stuffed toys.
Unacceptable items are dirty or oily items, duvets, quilts, sleeping bags, pillows, cushions and carpets.
The bags have to be placed inside the blue recycling bin to be collected by the council’s collection team which will leave a replacement textile bag.
The scheme is being run throughout Suffolk by the Suffolk Waste Partnership (SWP), a partnership of seven district and borough councils and the county council.
Scheme member Babergh District Council says the trial is not revenue-generating for Babergh but part of the SWP’s drive to recycle or compost 60 per cent of the county’s waste by 2015.
A recent analysis of rubbish bins in Suffolk revealed around 7,000 tonnes of clothing and textiles end up in landfill every year, costing taxpayers more than £600,000 in disposal fees.
Babergh Council says residents are strongly urged to continue to donate to charity shops or their local textile banks where they would normally do so.
