New business owners want to take on the big boys
NEW BEGINNINGS: Marie Bernadine-Dann, left, and Katie Barnbrook.
The owners of a new coffee shop, which opened in Sudbury on Monday, are aiming to be the best in town and take on the chain brands.
The Coffee House in Gainsborough Street welcomed its first customers this week after a three-week refurbishment to convert the premises of the former C A Watson and Sons greengrocer’s.
The business, which sells cakes, sandwiches and other light meals, is owned by Sudbury businessman Alastair Campbell and best friends Katie Barnbrook and Marie Dann, who previously worked at nighbouring Jack Spratt sandwich bar for six years until its closure earlier this month.
Mr Campbell, who owns five businesses including Zest Gym and Acam Mechanical Services in Sudbury, said: “I don’t think this is a risk – the recession doesn’t mean you don’t open a business, it means you have to be the best in your business.
Future plans include using the basement area for outside catering and expanding the menu. Mr Campbell said he hopes to link The Coffee House with his gym and other businesses in town with loyalty discounts and memberships.
“We are just trying to beat the bigger competition in Sudbury by networking between small businesses,” he said.
Mrs Barnbrook, from Ballingdon, said: “Marie and I have been friends for 20 years and have always worked together.”
“We couldn’t have done it without Alastair’s help, he has been an absolute star.”
