New bid for site of closing middle school
NEW BID: An independent school is interested in taking over Stoke-by-Nayland Middle School.
Stoke-by-Nayland Middle School could remain a school if plans by an unnamed independent school get the go-ahead.
Suffolk County Council has confirmed that the 50-year-old school, which has nine acres of land, is currently the focus of an approach by another school.
It wants to take over the building and grounds after the middle school closes its doors in July as part of the Schools Organisation Review, which sees all the county’s 40 middle schools closing.
A spokesman said: “Suffolk County Council has very recently received a time-limited, unsolicited approach from an independent school in relation to the Stoke-by-Nayland Middle School site, which we are minded to explore. But before the county council considers this further, it would like to hear from anyone who has an alternative sustainable proposal to purchase the site.” Any alternative proposals have to be in by 5pm on March 12 .
He added: “The sale of any property is commercially sensitive and therefore we cannot disclose any more information at this early stage.”
Una Oakes, chairman of Stoke-by-Nayland Parish Council, said it had only recently been notified about the approach. The parish council was glad it could become another school. She said there had also been support for affordable housing as a development option for the site.
