Man grew own cannabis to ease back pain

A GREAT Waldingfield man who started growing his own cannabis to help ease back pain and arthritis has been fined more than £200.

Stephen Oliver, from Folly Road, appeared at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with the production of the Class B drug after 13 plants were discovered at his home.

Rosalind Cappleman, prosecuting, said police officers had searched the 44-year-old’s home on July 26 and found five cannabis plants, along with cannabis production equipment, under a black tent in his bedroom.

She said eight plants had also been found in his greenhouse.

“He told officers the cannabis was for his own personal use due to pain in his back and arthritis in his elbow,” said Miss Cappleman.

In mitigation, Kevin McCarthy said his client, who pleaded guilty, suffered from chronic physical illness and depression.

“He takes the cannabis to alleviate the pain and in full knowledge of his GP,” he said.

Oliver started producing the drug after the street value went up, said Mr McCarthy.

“He says the sooner it is decriminalised the better,” he added.

Oliver was fined £100, ordered to pay costs of £50 and a victim surcharge of £15.

He was also fined £50 for breaching a conditional discharge in relation to a shoplifting offence earlier this year. The cannabis and equipment was destroyed.
