Lorry driver released on bail
THE 38-year-old tanker driver whose 44-tonne vehicle collided with a passenger train in Little Cornard on Tuesday has appeared in court.
Arvydas Bartasius, of Hawthorn Close, Ely, Cambridgeshire, appeared before Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' Court this morning having been charged with endangering safety on the railway.
He has been released on conditional bail until October 1.
Twenty-one people were injured in the smash, which resulted in the National Express East Anglia train from Sudbury to Marks Tey cutting the 44-tonne sewage tanker in two. The front carriage of the train was also derailed.
The lorry was removed from the scene on Tuesday night, while the crumpled train carriages were cleared from the tracks yesterday morning.
The line was reopened this morning.
