Layham man helped smuggle one million cigarettes
A 49-YEAR-OLD man who helped smuggle tobacco and cigarettes into the country avoided paying £200,000 in duty and tax, a court heard.
Anthony Wheeler, of Wyncoll’s Lane, Layham, was a part a five-strong gang which illegally brought more than one million cigarettes into the UK hidden in cardboard packaging.
At Ipswich Crown Court on Friday, September 21, Wheeler admitted fraudulently evading duty on 430 kilogrammes of tobacco and more than one million cigarettes.
The court was told that between June 2007 and June 2009, the gang brought in seven consignments, destined for the black market, which were intercepted by Customs officials.
These were found to contain a total of 3.6million cigarettes and 1.6tonnes of tobacco. The duty evaded was upwards of £500,000.
Wheeler is due to be sentenced next month.
