Ken’s honour for community service

Sudbury Rotarian Ken Chamberlin has received one of the organisation’s highest honours.

Mr Chamberlin, of Meadow Place has been made a Paul Harris Fellow, an award named after the American founder of Rotary International who started the organisation 108 years ago.

The Sudbury group has been going for 62 years and there are just four current members of Sudbury Rotary Club who are fellows. In the UK, Rotary clubs make the award to Rotarians and non-Rotarians who have made an outstanding commitment to the community.

Mr Chamberlin joined the club in 1998 and has been described as a stalwart of the group, taking on many roles including community service chairman, president in 2004/2005 and treasurer for a number of years.

He has also been the custodian of Santa’s grotto, a caravan which was stored away at his former farm in Newman’s Green when not required.

The surprise award was sprung on Mr Chamberlin at a recent meeting. “I was duly stunned,” admitted Ken. “It is a great honour.”

Born in Lavenham, and having lived all his life in Sudbury, Mr Chamberlin and his wife Lyn are retiring to France in March but are hoping that many club members and his family will visit them.
