A NEW MAN: Jon Plumb has been described as an inspiration.

Seven stone lighter and feeling fitter than ever, one Halstead man is reaping the benefits of joining a slimming group.

In the 17 months since Jon Plumb first started attending Slimming World meetings in Great Cornard, he has lost seven stone and was recently named the group’s man of the year.

The 43-year-old spent a number of years unhappy with his weight but was unsure about joining a slimming group.

“I always thought that slimming groups were just for women, but my best friend’s wife took me along to her group in Great Cornard,” said Mr Plumb.

“I was very nervous walking into the group but I soon realised we were all there for the same reason.

“I haven’t looked back since and, at seven stone lighter, I definitely don’t have a single regret about joining.”

Exercise has also gone from being a chore to an everyday activity for Mr Plumb, a product designer.

Previously taking the dog out for a walk was a serious undertaking, now he has moved on from his humble beginnings and regularly visits the gym – even undertaking a charity rowing challenge.

“I can honestly say I feel like a different man since losing weight,” he said. “There were things I would avoid doing when I was overweight.

“Now, I feel much healthier, I don’t ache or get short of breath and haven’t had a single cold.”

Kath Hampshire, his mentor at the Slimming World group in Great Cornard, said: “Jon is proof that men can benefit from getting support to eat more healthily and become more active.

“He’s a real inspiration to everyone in the group and should feel very proud.”
