Jane makes her case for police role

A CANDIDATE hoping to be appointed in a new role within Suffolk Police was in Sudbury on Thursday.

Jane Basham was joined by town councillor Ian Pointon outside Sudbury Town Hall to let people know about the upcoming election in November.

Ms Basham, from Hadleigh, is the Labour candidate hoping to be appointed as the new Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

Under new government reforms, the Police Authority – an independent body which governs the police forced – is being scrapped in favour of having a PCC instead.

The PCC will have the power to hire or fire the Chief Constable, be responsible for the police budget and set priorities within the force.

Ms Basham will go head-to-head with Tim Passmore, Tory leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, for the top job.

She said: “I am really worried about the level of public awareness regarding these elections and I think there are many people in the county who don’t know anything about them.

“November isn’t a great time to hold an election anyway as many people don’t want to go out and vote when its cold and dark.

“This election is very important because the new commissioner will have a lot of influence.”

She added: “I want to make sure the community is as involved as possible in what is going on.”

Every member of the public who is on the electoral register can vote on November 15.

GUNNING FOR GLORY: Jane Basham, Labour’s PCC candidate.
