Jane grows her organic business

SOWING the seeds of lettuce, onions, leeks and parsnips has become not only a labour of love for one green-fingered mum, but a growing source of income.

Jane Hutton, 41, is on a mission to bring organic vegetables to dinner tables across Suffolk and Essex.

The mother-of-three has just successfully converted a field in Newton Green to completely organic status as part of her pure food campaign.

Mrs Hatton, a former Cornard Upper School pupil, said: "This has been my goal for a long time. For the past three years I have been running my own organic vegetable box delivery business by using organic suppliers in a 30-mile wide radius of Sudbury, but I really wanted to be more self-sufficient.

"In January, the Soil Association certified my 13-acre field in Newton Green as totally organic and I'm now planting a range of veggies which will give me year-round produce."

When Mrs Hutton quit her regular job in the late 90s to start a family she was determined to do things different ly when she returned to work, and hit on the idea of the organic box.

"I wanted something that would give me time with my children and the chance to work outdoors in a healthier environment, so the veggie box delivery seemed perfect.

"I also care passionately about where food comes from and what we are putting in ourselves. I think we are returning to a time when people want organic locally produced food," she said.

Growing organically to supply her increasing number of customers has not been easy.

"As I don't use any sprays or chemicals there is always the risk of something destroying an entire crop, but it's a chance you have to take," she added.
