Investigation into train crash 'well under way'

THE recovery operation and investigation into the collision was continuing yesterday.

Deputy Chief Constable Paul Crowther, of the British Transport Police, said the gathering of "physical and technical" evidence was now at an advanced stage.

The Free Press understands that the black box was removed from the train cab yesterday afternoon, in the hope that data from it will shed some light on what caused the collision.

And a 130-tonne crane was also brought on to the site yesterday. The machinery was being pieced together on-site ahead of attempting to remove the crumpled carriages from the tracks.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said yesterday: "The recovery phase is well under way and engineers are constructing a platform to support the 130-tonne crane that will remove the first carriage of the train.

"Overhead power lines will also have to be moved.

"This operation will prove a significant engineering challenge and we remain mindful of the impact this incident has had on the local community, who have been very supportive throughout."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call British Transport Police on 0800 405040.
