In My View by Paul Bloomfield
IS it just me, or does everybody else get a little sick of Christmas getting rammed down your throat nearly three months before the actual big day?
From mid October shops and supermarkets have already stocked their shelves with Christmas lines, while your television screen is bombarded with adverts informing you the man with the white beard and red suit will soon be here.
I have one friend who gets so enraged at seeing Christmas adverts on TV in October, that he shouts expletives at the box every time there is a hint of tinsel or turkey.
What annoys me is that Christmas is essentially just one day. Yes I know the song says there are 12 days of Christmas, but come on, really, it's only really about Christmas Day isn't?
The same routine happens every year, though.
We wade through the crowds in town centres buying presents that most of your family and friends probably don't want or need.
We queue up at the supermarket, spending hundreds of pounds on food that will never get eaten. I guarantee people have still got food in their cupboards today that they bought last year.
But we never learn, we will still overspend and buy enough food to feed an army even if you've only got a handful of family visiting you on Christmas or Boxing Day.
I also feel sorry for the parents who don't have lots of money, but still struggle to try and some how buy little Johnny his Playstation – leaving them in dire financial circumstances for the coming year.
Of course this year is going to be more financially difficult as well, with the recession and credit crunch hitting people in the pocket.
Don't get me wrong, money and spending aside, I appreciate it is a exciting time for children and their parents on Christmas morning as they watch their little ones' faces glow in delight as they open their gifts.
And it's great that some families who don't get to see each other all year round have the chance to catch up over a cracker and plate of turkey.
Positives and negatives aside though, I do sometimes think that Christmas should be like the Olympics ... every four years.
