A young volunteer has credited Hadleigh’s Porch Project with making him the person he is today after receiving an award.

Adam Steer, who lives in the town, was named Suffolk under-25 Young Volunteer of the Year on Wednesday.

The High Sheriff of Suffolk, Sir Edward Greenwell, presented the award during a ceremony to celebrate the work of voluntary groups and unsung heroes.

Adam said he had gained a lot from working at the Porch Project – a youth club with more than 300 members run from St Mary’s Church.

“I was a really shy person and I wouldn’t be anywhere today without the Porch Project,” he said.

“They are the people who got me here. You get the warmest feeling inside once you have done something good for the community.”

The ceremony was held at University Campus Suffolk, with the High Sheriff paying tribute to the award winners.

“It was a very difficult task to choose winners out of so many excellent nominations,” he said.

“It has been a privilege to have met so many people who devote their lives to making Suffolk a better and safer place.”
