Green backing for battle to stop Tesco supermarket plans

The development of a Tesco supermarket in Hadleigh will “rip the heart out of the town” according to the area’s Green Party.

Babergh Green Party is backing a campaign to prevent the store being built and is calling on the district council’s planning committee to reject the application for the former Brett Works site.

“Tesco will rip the heart out of Hadleigh and turn the place into a soulless clone town,” said the party’s co-ordinator Robert Lindsay.

The company has been attempting to build on the site for 14 years and submitted a fresh application for a 2,500 square metre store in the summer.

But Mr Lindsay, who is a parish councillor in nearby Bildeston, said he agreed with Hands off Hadleigh chairman Jan Byrne that the shop was not needed given the recent development of Morrisons on the Buyright site.

“Babergh planners should be encouraging people to walk and cycle to Hadleigh’s independent local shops and businesses, not allowing a multi-national firm stocking imported food to put a car park and a superstore on a water meadow,” he said.

The supermarket’s previous proposals for the land were defeated by seven votes to eight in November.
