A SUDBURY grandmother “sprung into action” to help her granddaughter’s emergency delivery on a toilet floor.

Lucy Hyde, of Meadow Lane, had been having contractions while doing housework four days after the scheduled due date of her second child on Friday, June 15.

She was taken to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds at 7pm, only to be told to come back later.

“The midwife had examined me and said ‘We’re heading in the right direction but nowhere near yet’, gave me two sleeping tablets and sent me on my way,” said Mrs Hyde, 33.

She returned to her sister and birthing partner Sally Kendall’s house in Bury St Edmunds where mum Mary Davies, of The Close, Sudbury, was looking after Mrs Hyde’s four-year-old son Finley, as well as Mrs Kendall’s children Erin, 7, and Oscar, 3.

Suddenly, the process moved up a gear. “I needed to go to the toilet and my mum helped me there, then I collapsed on all fours and shouted that I needed to push,” said Mrs Hyde, whose husband Rory had phoned the midwife.

“Then I screamed I could feel that I had delivered the head and told my sister to come and look, so my mum crouched behind me ready to catch. We had towels on the floor and all of a sudden my mum had delivered the baby.”

“It was pretty amazing,” said Mrs Davies. “Lucy knew what was happening the whole time and I just sprung into action when she said she had delivered the head.

“It was all very surreal but I felt calm about it as I knew I had to help.”
