Golfers swing into action
PUTTERS and sand wedges will be at the ready when a group of keen golfers unite to help a severely disabled child.
Around 20 people are expected to take part in a charity golf day at Newton Green Golf Club next weekend to raise funds for the Free Press appeal for Long Melford youngster Megan Roper.
The five-year-old has an undiagnosed condition which leaves her unable to sit up or control her limbs. She also needs to be fed through a tube.
Jim Devereux, a club member for 10 years, has organised the day, which will see players completing 18 holes.
“I have been wanting to do a charity golf day for a while and we wanted to do something for Megan,” said Mr Devereux, 72, from Nursery Road, Great Cornard.
“All the lads at the club said we should do it and there has been a great response.”
He added: “The family and the little girl are in a terrible situation and if we couldn’t help out I don’t know what the world would be coming to.”
Following the game, those taking part in the golf day will be invited to the King’s Head pub in Great Cornard, where donation buckets will be on the bar.
“I have read about Megan and when Jim asked me to help out I didn’t hesitate,” said Gary Twyman, a partner at the pub who will also be playing. “Hopefully it will be a good day.”
Megan’s parent Sarah and Carl are looking to raise £46,000 to improve their home and help Megan, who is undergoing tests at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
