THE obligatory brightly-coloured jumpers were of course on display, but instead of playing for the bragging rights of the Ryder Cup, members of Newton Green Golf Club shot a hole in one for the Megan Roper appeal at the weekend.

More than 20 golfers completed the 18-hole course on Saturday as they took part in a charity event to boost the Free Press appeal and help the Long Melford five-year-old.

A total of £305 was raised and organiser Jim Devereux said an excellent day was had by all.

“I’m really pleased with how much we made,” said the 72-year-old.

“Every little helps towards the appeal and I’d like to thank everyone who turned up to play.”

Megan, along with parents Sarah and Carl, and big sister Ruth, were on hand to watch the golfers tee off and, after the serious business of bunkers and perilous rough were safely negotiated, players retired to the 19th hole – the Kings Head pub in Great Cornard.

“It was great to see the whole Roper family and there was a brilliant atmosphere on the day,” said Mr Devereux, from Nursery Road.

“We’re now trying to set up another event at Brett Vale.”
