Glemsford school strikes deal for land

A VILLAGE school is celebrating after a deal was agreed to quadruple its playing field.

Glemsford Primary School will benefit from the 1.8-acre site which Suffolk County Council will rent from a local farmer at a peppercorn rent of £1 per year for 10 years.

Iain Birtwell, who has been joint headteacher at the school with Phil Ilsley since the start of the month, said: “It is incredibly exciting news for the school. We are on a very tight site so this opens up a whole wealth of opportunities.”

The field, which lies immediately to the west of the school across Shepherds Lane, will be fenced off and used for sports and will include a conservation area and planting scheme with native tree species.

Mr Birtwell said he hoped that archaeological investigations at the site would begin in the next few months and would involve the school’s pupils.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the children and they will gain immensely from it,” he said.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council, the local education authority, said: “Glemsford Primary School has long needed extra space for children to take part in sport and play.

“This agreement is therefore an important part of improving the facilities at the school.”
