Gifts help rangers with work

The common lands charity has been left money by two people who enjoyed Sudbury's riverside for many years.

Roy Southgate was well known to the rangers and would always stop for a word and a joke while out walking his dogs.

He was a true countryman, who appreciated the policies that the charity has in place for the long-term improvement to the riverside environment as well as improving access for most site users.

Bob Crane used to walk Friars Meadow and appreciated the work to maintain the area as an amenity for local people. He enjoyed the backdrop of the river and grazing cattle on the Wardman Meadows.

The generous donations have allowed the charity to buy a trailer to tow behind the Land Rover. The trustees have recognised this generosity of Roy and Bob by putting their names on the back of the trailer, which will be used to transport fencing materials, gravel and hoggin for footpath maintenance and logs and other materials to create habitats for wildlife.

This is the first time that individuals who have not been in some way directly connected with the charity have made donations.
