Get ready for bloom judges
There's no better way to show you are proud of your town than by helping it look its best.
The Sudbury in Bloom committee does just that – working all year round in readiness for the all-important summer visit by Anglia in Bloom judges.
Weeds are pulled up, hanging baskets prepared and roundabouts are preened, in the hope of catching the judges' eyes.
The committee, made up of volunteers, also fund-raises to keep the town looking smart and chairman Nick Irwin is the first to praise his fellow members.
"Everyone does it because they want to. They don't get paid, it's not political or business- led at all," he said.
He added: "I think everyone should be proud of Sudbury and should do their bit.
"For example, a hanging basket where there wasn't one before makes a big difference."
When the group first formed more than ten years ago the town had around a dozen hanging baskets. They now number 200.
"We have tremendous support from the councils, individuals and sponsors and Sudbury is capable of being top of the tree," Mr Irwin added.
John Shannon joined the committee in 2002. He said the Sudbury in Bloom ethos was about more than pretty flowers.
"It's about the environment as a whole, including litter problems and chewing gum on the pavements."
Mr Irwin has written to Sudbury Town Council to ask members to discuss tackling the amount of weeds growing throughout the town.
"They are growing on gutters, pavements, along walls bordering pavements, and around street signs and lamp posts," he said.
Anyone who wants to get involved in Sudbury in Bloom can contact the committee via the town hall on 01787 372331.
