Thomas Gainsborough School pupil Gemma Bates has received a top national award.
The 16-year-old was awarded the National Diana Award for Volunteering – named after the late Princess of Wales – at a ceremony in London.
She was one of 40 young people nominated for the award. Gemma volunteers both inside and outside the school and is a mentor.
Assistant headteacher Carmel Bavington said: “Gemma is a truly inspirational and selfless individual who, with her infectious smile, strives to go the extra mile.”
Sandra Hindson, head of English, said: “It was my pleasure and privilege to take Gemma and her mother to collect her award. It was an amazing day for an amazing student.”
Another nominee was the late Steven Sutton, who raised £4.2 million for Teenage Cancer Trust.
