Fundraising ideas keep flooding in
A STEAM engine tour raising money for the Free Press Megan Roper appeal will be rumbling through the streets this weekend.
The event, being run by the East Anglian Traction Engine Society, will begin at Webb’s Yard in Acton on Saturday morning.
Steam rollers, road locomotives, wagons and classic cars will go through Sudbury on their way to Gestingthorpe before returning through Long Melford in the afternoon.
Kevin Baldwin, one of the organisers, said it would be a unique chance for residents to see the engines at close quarters.
“We have never had a road run in this part of the world quite like this one, so it’s a rare opportunity to see these fantastic machines doing what they were built for – steaming along the road,” he said.
On Sunday, the tour will travel through Acton, Milden and Great Waldingfield and on both days collections will be made in aid of four-year-old Megan Roper from Long Melford, who suffers from an undiagnosed illness which causes development delay.
Her parents, Carl and Sarah, are currently trying to raise £46,000 to transform their home to improve Megan’s life.
“We will be holding a raffle and auction over the weekend and have decided to donate proceeds to the appeal as it is a very local and worthy cause,” said Mr Baldwin.
n Two brothers who ran a marathon in support of our appeal have revealed their final fundraising figure.
Steve and Mark Arnold, both from Great Cornard, completed the Edinburgh Marathon after being inspired by Megan.
The duo decided to run the 26.2-mile distance for the youngster after reading about her struggles, and raised a total of £2,760.
“It was a tremendous effort and we would like to thank all those that were so kind to sponsor us,” said Steve.
