Fish and chip shop for sale
A fish and chip shop which has been in Sudbury for nearly 80 years is to be sold.
Ye Olde Fish and Chip Shoppe in Cross Street shut four weeks ago. A sign has been placed in the front window reading “closed until further notice”.
Owner Steven Boggis said the business, which was established in 1926, was being put up for sale.
“The chip shop is closed for the foreseeable future,” he said.
“This is a result of difficult trading times and additional competition. The business is up for sale.”
Mr Boggis said that as a result of the closure, five people had lost their jobs.
Dominic Hentall, who lives next door to the business, said he would be sad to see it go.
“It is a shame because it has been there for a long time,” he said. “It used to be busy on a Friday night and was very popular in the past.”
The decision to sell the takeaway highlights the contrasting fortunes of fish and chip shops in the town.
In October, Peyton Plaice in Borehamgate closed after 22 years, while the Codfather in King Street has recently announced plans to expand into a neighbouring premises.
Chequers Fish Bar in North Street was also closed for a lengthy period last year, but has since reopened.
