Fire service link put on hold for at least two years
Plans to merge Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service with its Cambridgeshire counterpart have been delayed.
Discussions into the link up have been on-going since last year and a public consultation was carried out in December.
However, earlier this week, Fred Brown, chairman of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority, revealed the potential savings from the merger were not as big as anticipated, and the proposals had been put on hold.
“A full merger could still happen and will probably take place when a clear line cannot be drawn between the two services,” he said.
Colin Spence, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for public safety, said he believed any merger was at least two years away.
“There is a considerable amount of work to do to ensure the business case provides members with the necessary information on which they can take a properly informed decision about the future of both services,” he said.
