Fairtrade for Sudbury

A group trying to get Fairtrade status for Sudbury is organising a series of different events to promote the initiative.

The Fairtrade Group is organising some events to tie in with One World Week which starts from Sunday and they kick off with an exhibition in Sudbury library, throughout the week, showing the work of the Fairtrade Foundation and the activities of the Sudbury organisation.

On Thursday, October 25, from 10am to 2pm, the Kettle and Fish, at St Peter’s on Market Hill, will be serving a range of homemade cakes baked with Fairtrade ingredients.

The River Stour Trust is serving Fairtrade teas, coffees and cakes at the Granary tearoom, in Quay Lane, on Sunday October 21 and Sunday October 28, from 11am to 5pm.

Chairman of the Sudbury group, the Rev John Boardman, said: “We are working towards the aim of acquiring official Fairtrade Town status for Sudbury, an accolade which it is felt would reflect well on the town.

“We are well on the way to achieving this, with the support of the town council, many institutions and a growing number of local shops and businesses.

“The group regularly runs stalls at public events to promote Fairtrade principles and sell Fairtrade products as well as running its own events. We also have the blessing of Lord Phillips who was instrumental in establishing the Fairtrade Foundation in 1996.”
