Elderly crash victim died of natural causes
A retired farmer who was involved in a collision with a refuse lorry died later the same day from natural causes, an inquest heard.
Aubrey Barber, 88, had been taken to hospital following the crash on the A1071 at Elmsett, near Hadleigh, on November 8 last year.
Moments before the accident, Mr Barber had complained to his wife Ellen that he was feeling unwell and slowed his Vauxhall Corsa car to about 20mph.
As the car slowed down, it was involved in a collision from the rear involving the refuse lorry, which damaged the bodywork of the Corsa and caused the rear window to fall out.
In a statement, refuse worker Julian Pilgrim, who was a passenger, told yesterday’s hearing that he estimated the speed of the Corsa to have fallen quickly to about 15mph, but the impact had not been hard.
The inquest heard how Mr Barber, of Hadleigh Road, Elmsett, was taken to Ipswich Hospital where he died later that day.
A post-mortem examination showed that Mr Barber’s death had not been caused by any injuries sustained in the accident but from natural causes.
Deputy Suffolk coroner Kevin McCarthy said the medical findings were that death was due to haemorrhage, a ruptured aorta and hypertension.
No injuries which could have directly caused his death had been sustained during the collision.
Recording a verdict of death due to natural causes, Mr McCarthy told the inquest: “Although Mr Barber went into hospital as a result of a road traffic accident, he died from natural causes.”
