A VILLAGE pub has had two of its staff recognised in a national competition.

Mitch Adams, 31, co-owner of The Thatcher’s Arms in Mount Bures, and supervisor Victoria Cook, 24, were placed in the final 10 of the Pilsner Urquell Master Bartender UK finals at RSA House in London.

Following a day of interviews, written tests on their knowledge of the beer and bar skills, Mr Adams was named in the top three, meaning he underwent a further round of competition and was guaranteed a trip to the international final in Prague.

He said: “It was pretty nerve-racking stuff as I had a round of role play.

“I was excited as I knew I had got the trip to Prague, but incredibly nervous to be standing in front of colleagues and peers.”

The UK heats attracted more than 2,000 applicants from pubs serving the Czech-produced Pilsner Urquell beer.

Although he missed out on the £10,000 prize for first spot, Mr Adams was not too upset.

“There were 10 finalists and two were from our tiny little pub,” he said. “I’m really proud of Victoria as well.”

The one downside to the success is that, due to the timing of his prize trip to the grand final, Mr Adams, whose family have owned the pub since November 2006, will miss his own beer festival.

“I’m missing the start of it – I’ve never missed it before so I will have to delegate this year,” he added.
