Dog mess makes life a misery for town residents

Disgusted residents have hit out at dog owners who refuse to clear up after their pets – leaving “offensive” excrement on paths and walkways.

The problem of dog fouling has got so bad around the Quay Lane area of Sudbury that enforcement notices were put up, only for someone to rip them down.

Cathy Rose, who lives with her husband Rob in nearby Kingfishers, said “brainless” dog owners were to blame, with a path from Catesby Meadow to Quay Lane particularly affected.

“It seems to have got worse in the last three months and, as soon as it gets cleared by the community warden, it is back again,” she said.

“It is becoming offensive and some of the neighbours will not walk there now.”

Mr Rose said more fines and CCTV were needed to catch the culprits.

“People don’t seem to have any respect for the environment and it is driving people mad,” he said.

“Those who don’t pick up after their dogs should get a hefty fine. They don’t think about the consequences – there are children going to St Gregory Primary School who could run through it.”

Dog fouling fines start at £50 but can rise to £1,000 for a second offence.

Sudbury mayor Jack Owen said dog owners needed to act more responsibly.

“The vast majority of dog owners pick up after their animal but it is those that don’t who spoil it for everyone else,” said Mr Owen, who lives in Catesby Meadow.

“I think it is unacceptable to leave dog mess on paths and people need to be fined if caught. We want to keep Sudbury tidy.”

Free dog fouling bags are available from the town council offices in Sudbury Town Hall.
