KINGFISHER Leisure Centre saw a return to the 1980s at the weekend with staff dressing up in fashions from the era and, most importantly, swim prices taking a big dive.

It was all done to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Sudbury swimming pool and leisure centre in 1987.

For the weekend, the cost of swimming was lowered to 1987 prices – £1.85 for an adult and £1.30 for a child.

Deputy mayor Adrian Osborne and his wife Jan were invited to officially open a weekend of celebrations to mark the milestone.

Tracey Copping chief executive of South Suffolk Leisure, which runs the pool on behalf of Babergh District Council, said: “We had a great time and we reckon we had about 400 people come along to celebrate the anniversary.

“We had staff dressed in 1980s, outfits which included the classic Flash Dance costumes with ankle warmers, wrist bands and head bands.

“A few had psychedelic outfits, but I couldn’t persuade any of them to come with a Sudbury perm which is what I had in the 1980s.”

Tracey was one of the original members of staff, at that time working in the kitchen.

“I remember it well,” she said. “We were all so excited and it was a big thing for the town. We were just so busy – people just kept coming and coming.”
