Daredevil stunt is back

THE famous Wall of Death returns to its home place of Boxford this weekend.

A daredevil motorcycle display, around a circular wall, was first performed by Tornado Smith, with a lioness called Briton in his sidecar, more than 80 years ago.

Tornado lived at The White Hart pub in Boxford, which is where the lioness is buried, and the show which made him famous is coming back tomorrow.

Mark Wilson, general manager of the White Hart, said: “These days, the show is performed by the Ken Fox Troupe and they tour the country with it.

“It was in Boxford about four-and-a-half years ago. Last time, we had about 3,000 people come along so we are expecting a very busy weekend.”

Boxford’s other pub The Fleece is planning to serve a specially-made ale bearing the name of the local legend.

John Norton, who runs Mill Green Brewery in Edwardstone, said: “We have a special brew for the occasion which was first made two years ago called Tornado Smith, with the use of some very unusual hops called Nelson Sauvin.

“They are not readily available, due to demand, but a few were saved for this occasion. Only a small amount is grown in New Zealand.”

The show runs between 6pm and 10pm on Friday, between noon and 10pm on Saturday and from noon to 6pm on Sunday.
