Money raised from a charity cycle ride in memory of a Lavenham soldier has reached £1,606 – proving the lycra shorts and aching limbs were well worth it.

The ride, which covered two courses of 50 and 70 kilometres, was put on in Hadleigh last month by The Birds Wot Bike group in aid of Help for Heroes. Tony Woodgate, father of Jo Woodgate, who died in Afghanistan in 2010, started the race from The George pub in the High Street.

Mr Woodgate also attended a production of Birdsong at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday, which was dedicated to his son.
