Crash victim remains in critical condition
ONE passenger remains in a critical but stable condition after a train collided with a sewage lorry on a level crossing in Little Cornard on Tuesday.
The train driver suffered a suspected fractured vertebrae while another person was flown to hospital by air ambulance.
Eighteen others were also injured in the smash.
The lorry driver, a 38-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
The line could remain closed for several days.
The crash happened when the 17:31 two-carriage diesel passenger train from Sudbury to Marks Tey struck the lorry.
A replacement bus service is operating between Marks Tey and Sudbury.
The lorry was split in two in the collision, while the front carriage of the train derailed but remained partially upright.
The level crossing is on private land and has a locked gate. Anyone wanting to use it needs to call a signaller for permission to cross.
A spokesman for Network Rail said no call was received prior to the crash.
The critically ill patient is being treated for severe abdominal injuries at Colchester General Hospital.
Three men and two women are expected to be discharged from the hospital later today after being treated for fractured ribs and cuts.
