Court bans Sudbury drink driver

A SUDBURY man was caught behind the wheel at nearly three times the legal drink drive limit during a “terrible time in his life”, a court heard.

Simon Anderton, of New Street, was stopped by police after he was seen driving erratically in the early hours of the morning on September 9.

Prosecutor Rosalind Cappleman told Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday that the 34-year-old was spotted by officers driving a blue Ford Galaxy in North Street at around 1am.

He was pulled over and the officers could immediately smell alcohol.

Anderton was arrested and taken to a police station where he recorded a reading of 99 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

In mitigation, Lyndon Davies said that Anderton, who was also convicted of drink driving in 2010, had committed the offence after an argument with his girlfriend.

“His car had been scratched and it was suggested that he moved it so it wasn’t damaged further,” said Mr Davies.

“He wasn’t moving it far but it was then that he was stopped by police.”

He added that Anderton accepted he had been drinking too much and this had been brought on by a number of personal setbacks.

“He has had a terrible time of it,” said Mr Davies. “He lost his father earlier this year, lost his job in May and his previous partner has moved away with his children.”

Magistrates ordered Anderton to see a probation officer before he was sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work, banned from driving for 40 months and ordered to pay £85 costs.

He had pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
