Couple’s kindness raises £635

THE kindness of a couple who chose to forgo presents on their diamond anniversary in favour of donations for the Free Press Megan Roper appeal has been rewarded.

Instead of receiving expensive gifts from friends and family to mark 60 years of married life, Fred and Doreen Bright, from Long Melford, asked well-wishers to boost our appeal for five-year-old Megan – and they raised more than £600.

The couple, who live in Middle Way, celebrated their special day on Thursday and held a party at the British Legion over the weekend, which was attended by around 100 guests.

“We managed to raise £635 for the appeal and everyone was very generous,” said Mr Bright, 81, who used to run the Swan pub with his wife.

“Knowing the money will go towards helping Megan means more to us than presents and we also raised £140 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.”

The latest fundraising for Megan, from Swanfield, takes the appeal total to £17,155, but the youngster’s parents Sarah and Carl are still way short of the amount they need to renovate their home.

A lift, specially adapted bathroom and sensory area are all required to help improve Megan’s life as she copes with a mystery condition.

The family have been told the work will cost them around £45,000 after grants.

“It is brilliant what Fred and Doreen have done for Megan,” said mum Sarah.

“It is a colossal amount to raise and we are very grateful.”
