A COUPLE due to celebrate 60 years of marriage have opted to forgo presents in favour of donations to the Megan Roper appeal.

Fred and Doreen Bright of Middle Way, Long Melford, will celebrate their diamond wedding on September 6.

But instead of receiving expensive gifts from family and friends, the pair have asked for donations to be made to our appeal for four-year-old Megan.

“We are always doing things for charity and we both agreed that this was what we wanted to do for our anniversary,” said Fred, 81.

“Megan is a local girl and that means you can really see the difference the money makes.”

Fred, who married Doreen, 81, in Brentwood, Essex, before moving to Long Melford to run The Swan pub for more than 15 years in 1983, said he had raised £700 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance for his birthday last year.

“We have two children, Linda and Graham, and they don’t mind that we don’t want presents,” he said.

“They are used to us doing this sort of thing.”

The couple are expecting around 100 people to attend a party at the British Legion in Long Melford.
