Councillor, 70, resigns after 14 years of service

A Babergh district councillor has resigned from his role after 14 years to allow more “new blood” in.

Peter Holbrook was Conservative member for the Bures St Mary ward, which includes Bures St Mary, Little Cornard and Newton parishes.

Mr Holbrook said he had planned to stand down at this time when Babergh’s merger with Mid Suffolk District Council was proposed, which would have seen a reduction in the number of councillors and re-election for the new wards.

“I am 70 now and we need more new blood, younger people,” he said, adding that he had suffered from some health issues which were being resolved.

“Being a councillor is absolutely absorbing and very rewarding when you influence something to go in what you see as the right way – you get a lot of job satisfaction from that,” he said.

Mr Holbrook said he planned to take more holidays and spend more time fishing and had received many kind messages from other councillors from all parties following his announcement.

A by-election for the Bures St Mary ward will be held on May 2 to coincide with elections for Suffolk County Council.
