Council must save £26million

A FREEZE on council tax and the transfer of over 3,000 jobs are to be considered by Suffolk County Council’s cabinet on Tuesday as part of budget savings proposals of £26million.

Members will discuss the proposals following four months of consultations as the council looks to make more than £50million in cuts in the next two years. If approved, the plans will go on to Full Council, who will make a decision on the budget in February.

Under the proposals, the number of people directly employed by the council would fall from 7,996 to 4,817 between March 2012 to 2013, although the majority of these will be transferred to organisations working on behalf of the council.

The plans also state that council tax would be frozen for a second year for 2012-13 at last year’s levels, as well as plans for £115million of capital investment including school reorganisation and broadband.

Council leader Mark Bee said: “The financial challenges we are facing in Suffolk are significant, but I’m determined that we must find a way to meet them while protecting the services we all value.”
