Council splits £3,500 between groups
ELEVEN charities and voluntary groups have benefited to the tune of more than £3,500 in grants and the free use of the Stevenson Centre, in Great Cornard.
Councillors agreed to the grants and donations at a meeting of Great Cornard Parish Council on Monday.
Five charities will get free use of the community centre for meetings, training sessions and social events.
They are Cornard and Chilton Horticultural Society, Great Cornard Lunch Club, the disabled and self-help group Dash, Great Cornard StreetWatch and First Responders.
Among the charities receiving money is Home-Start Babergh, which was given a donation of £500 with free use of the centre for its Christmas party after councillor Frances Jackson praised the help the charity gives to families needing assistance.
She said: “We do well out of it here in Great Cornard and in this current climate I’d like to see it get £750.”
Councillors agreed to donate £500 with free use of the hall.
Other grants were agreed for the Sudbury Visually Impaired group (£250), Relate Norfolk and Suffolk (£300), The Kernos Centre in Sudbury (£300), Suffolk Accident and Rescue Service (£500) and the Citizens Advice Bureau (£750).
Councillor John Sayers said: “I would say we have got areas of deprivation in Great Cornard and think the pressure on families is quite considerable at the moment.
“An awful lot of families are getting into debt and we ought to give a little bit more to the CAB if we can afford to.”
Councillor Tom Keane said: “I would like to agree with councillor Sayers and say, as a representative of the CAB, times have been hard.
“It is struggling terribly to get people there to give advice and it is really under the cosh.”
