The role of clerk at Sudbury Town Council is likely to be split in two in the wake of the dismissal of Sue Brotherwood.

Councillor Nigel Bennett, part of the council’s human resources committee, said their recommendation would be that it would be best to divide the role between a town clerk and a finance officer.

Mr Bennett said the recommendations would soon be taken to the full council.

If approved, Mr Bennett said they would advertise the posts in September.

Former clerk Mrs Brotherwood was sacked before Christmas after an internal investigation found she had misused public funds by approving loans for herself and council staff, breaching council policy on how taxpayers’ money should be handled.

Mrs Brotherwood admitted working outside these guidelines but said no money had been lost through her actions.
