Council promises Sudbury lamppost repairs, six months after damage

A Sudbury lamppost left leaning to one side when a car crashed into it in April is finally set to be repaired.

The streetlight, near the roundabout in Melford Road, was hit by a young driver six months ago and sparked safety concerns from nearby residents in August when it had still not been fixed.

Suffolk County Council responded to those complaints by saying the lamppost had been assessed as posing no danger to vehicles or pedestrians. A spokeswoman said the necessary repairs would take place within the first two weeks of August.

When asked this week about the delay to the work, a spokesman for the council said once a problem of this type was reported, highways contractor Carillion was responsible for repair work.

“As some traffic management is needed for this repair, Carillion has scheduled the works to coincide with other work in the area,” he said.

“This reduces both the cost to the taxpayer and disruption to road users.

“As it happens, the works are scheduled to be carried out next week.”
