Two of Sudbury’s most prominent figures are preparing to bid farewell to the town they have dedicated much of their lives to improving.
Husband and wife Peter and Valerie Goodchild, from Elizabeth Way, have each played significant roles in the area for many decades.
On Sunday, the couple invited friends to a leaving party at St Peter’s as they get ready to move from Sudbury to Northern Ireland to be closer to family.
“It is bitter-sweet as we have so many memories here and are leaving behind a lot of friends,” said Mrs Goodchild.
“But it is something new for us and we are looking forward to it.”
The couple have been married for 45 years and met after Mr Goodchild came to the town to become landlord of the Bear Inn in 1964.
They have both spent much of their spare time working for the good of the community, with Mr Goodchild twice taking on the role of mayor during eight years on Sudbury Town Council.
Mrs Goodchild, a former reporter at the Free Press, has also been heavily involved alongside her husband with Sudbury Rotary Club, running Sudbury’s Christmas Tree Festival and helping with Sudbury Newstalk.
“We would not change a thing,” she said.”
The couple are due to depart on Monday, May 26.
