Collectors club rolls back the years

TRACTOR MANIA: Vintage tractors ploughing a field attracted hundreds of visitors to Great Waldingfield.

A FARMING scene from yesteryear, with 20 vintage tractors ploughing a field, greeted visitors to a show on Sunday.

A working day was organised by the Monks Eleigh Bygone Collectors Club in a farmer’s field off Valley Road, Great Waldingfield.

Club members brought along vintage farming equipment, including working tractors, which they demonstrated to the gathered crowds. They included a 1949 Field Marshall, a 1940s Bristol Crawler and a 1960s Massey Ferguson.

Club chairman Paul Goodchild said the event, which has been held for 28 years, was in aid of a prostate cancer charity, with the club voting for a different charity to benefit from the proceeds of the event every year.

The club’s 150 members come from Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk and includes an equal split of men and women.

“We are not farmers, most are ordinary working people who have collecting as a hobby,” said Paul.

“Our membership has grown a lot in the last couple of years. Most of the members are older, but we do have younger members and we try to get youngsters interested in what we do.”

He said the club was still looking for a building or outbuilding to use as a museum to house some of the club’s collection.

Money is still being counted from the working day, but a recent open weekend where visitors were treated to a display of Paul’s personal collection of 300 vintage radios, televisions and sound equipment raised £722 for Alzheimer’s sufferers.
