Clare castle gets 100k grant

MORE than £100,000 has been provided towards the restoration of the castle remains in Clare, which dates back to at least the 11th century.

The work forms part of a £400,000 investment made jointly by English Heritage and Suffolk County Council for work on not just Clare castle, but also the medieval ruins at Greyfriars in Dunwich.

English Heritage is providing £102,000 for the renovation work in Clare and £186,000 for Dunwich, with a further £112,000 of county council funding being split between the two projects.

The castle ruins are the centre piece of Clare Castle Country Park, and with a decision on who should be taking over the management of the park from the county council due to be announced tomorrow, the investment is a timely boost to the town.

Clare Town Council chairman Keith Haisman said: “The town council is delighted to hear that the investment is being made by English Heritage and Suffolk County Council to restore and repair the ruins and hopefully this will enable the castle and the country park to remain a very attractive site for visitors from near and far for years to come.”

Lisa Chambers, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for environment and property management, said: “I am delighted to see this significant investment being made by English Heritage to maintain these important elements of Suffolk’s heritage.

“By carrying out these important restoration works, we are securing the historical legacy of these sites for generations to come and I am certain they will continue to attract visitors.”

The restoration will involve building works to consolidate and weather-proof the castle keep and bailey walls.
