Cider drinking litter bug angers village residents

A “PHANTOM litter bug” is making an eyesore of a Long Melford estate.
Over the last two weeks, a total of 209 cans of cider have been crushed and dumped along a 500-yard stretch of Shaw Road.
Resident Len Jarvis said: “I went out every day from Friday, January 13, and there were cans every day up until the Wednesday. I clean them up and then they are back again.
“They cause litter problems – you don’t want this outside your front door. Sometimes they are stacked up or they have been put in hedges and bushes too.”
Mr Jarvis said the problem was evident across the village.
“People go drinking and leave cans along with fish and chip papers everywhere, and at the end of Olivers Close there are six bags of cans which have been sitting there a long while,” he said.
County and district councillor Richard Kemp said the littering was bizarre.
“It seems to be a recurring situation in that area. There appears to be a phantom litterbug,” he said.
“I just wonder why somebody can be bothered to go to the trouble to put them in a sack but not in a bin to be collected.”
