Cheers Charles, let’s drink to your birthday
A TOAST DICKENS: Donna Bojko, bar manager at the Brewery Tap, with a selection of ales in honour of Charles Dickens.
PUB regulars will be raising a glass or two to Charles Dickens next week.
To coincide with the 200th anniversary of the writer’s birth on Tuesday, The Brewery Tap in East Street, Sudbury, is laying on a selection of beers named after characters and sayings from his books.
Throughout the week, ales such as Bah Humbug, a line much used by Ebenezer Scrooge in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and Micawber’s Mild, based on a character from David Copperfield, will be on tap for customers.
Donna Bojko, the pub’s bar manager, said that as Dickens had visited Sudbury as a reporter working for Daily News to cover a story about the corrupt dealings of some of the town councillors in 1834, it was only right the occasion was marked.
“Dickens referred to Sudbury as Eatanswill in the Pickwick Papers and it is fitting that he will be remembered here,” she said.
“Hopefully lots of people will try the beers and toast his birthday.”
The beers will be available from Monday to Sunday, with old fashioned meals, including game pie and rabbit stew, also being served up at the pub.
A folk band will be performing on the Sunday and bar staff will be dressed in Victorian costumes.
