Centre to get new look

THE refurbishment of a town centre shopping centre, much criticised due to its deteriorating condition and dangerous flooring, is to begin imminently.

Sudbury’s Borehamgate Precinct is to receive a badly needed makeover this summer, with the work being carried out in three phases.

Plans for the centre, built in the 1960s, involve replacing the existing glazed roof, extending the ground floor to include another retail unit and changing the floor and wall tiles.

The Local Shopping REIT Plc, which owns the precinct, said the revamp would start next month and the firm’s building surveyor, John Owen, was currently in discussions with three contractors to decide who would carry out the work.

Jill Rendell, a spokeswoman for the company, said: “The works will be in three stages ensuring efficacy and the minimisation of tenant disruption.

“Phase one of the refurbishment and our key priority is to renew the flooring throughout and re-design the existing tiled ramp. Works will begin as soon as the competitive bids are put forth and the remaining details finalised.”

She added that after the flooring was completed the interior and exterior of the centre would be redecorated, with new entrance canopies and signage throughout.

Proposals for the centre, notorious for its slippery flooring, were given planning consent by Babergh District Council in November.
