Carol set for Africa ride

A LITTLE Cornard woman has spoken of her nerves ahead of the ride of her life.

Carol Jones, 52, from Upper Road, will set off on Saturday to cycle 250 miles across Kenya in East Africa in five days.

The event is one of five rides supporting Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action, as part of the Women V Cancer Cycle Challenge.

“I’m very nervous,” said Carol. “It is a big adventure, and I have never actually met any of the 90 women I am going with.”

She has managed to raise more than £3,500 through car boot sales, a quiz night and sponsorship from friends and family, after being inspired by her sister Diane’s breast cancer diagnosis two days before Christmas in 2010.

“It is all about raising money and awareness,” said Carol. “Diane has just been given the all clear, which is great news.”

Although the cold weather has hampered her training, Carol is hoping she can complete the ride, which has also raised a total of £50,000 for a Kenyan hospital.

“I have been training pretty hard,” she said. “I haven’t been able to get out much recently, but I am better off in the heat of the gym anyway as it will be 30 or 40 degrees over there.”
