Campaigner: We have hope
The chairman of Hadleigh Town Council’s planning committee says it is “regrettable” the district council did not keep it in the picture about future plans for land around an iconic building.
Town councillor Penny Cook, a former mayor of Hadleigh, remains optimistic that the putting green at the back of East House, in George Street – used as a public open space by residents – can be saved from developers.
Babergh District Council owns the grade II listed Georgian house and land, and it is proposing to change the house from community use and an office into two homes, while building four detached houses and cart lodges in its gardens.
The council says it is the most viable solution for East House, which has remained empty for the last six years.
On Tuesday, Miss Cook will present a petition, expected to contain around 1,000 signatures, at a full meeting of the district council, along with campaigner Gavin Talbot, calling for the land not to be built on.
She said: “I think it’s regrettable that the council didn’t see fit to talk to the town council, indeed talk to anyone about it really.
“I think we have to be optimistic; an awful lot of people have signed the petition and an awful lot of work has been put into the campaign.”
